Stop 8, Watkins Glen

The first time I heard of Watkins Glen, my dad told me about the Grand Prix race here.  We may have seen it on ABC's Wide World is Sports.  I was never a fan of automotive racing, but my dad loved cars and was a bit of a fan of auto racing.  I think he did some street racing as a teen and once bought something of a race car from the son of a preacher who moved into the Faulkner's old house in 16th avenue in Lanett.

Anyway, Watkins Glen is on the southern top of Seneca Lake, in the heart of the Finger Lake region on NY.  It's beautiful here.  NY wine country is also part of the area.  Housing is surprisingly affordable.

The park here is famous for its waterfalls which we have not seen yet.  Fortunately, the campground is isolated from the gorge trail along the stream, so the crowds don't really impact us in the campground.  There was a rally here this week for owners of a Canadian RV, Alto, which uniquely offers a teardrop with an articulating roof.  There were almost 50 of them here this week.  They are beautiful, well designed and well made.

We were pleasantly surprised at the campground at WG State Park.  Despite the popular draw of the Gorge Trail for day trippers, the campground was quiet and peaceful.
